Super Six

The mustache power train continued through Yankee Stadium on Saturday as Johnny Damon became the second mustached player to hit a walk-off in as many days. The Yankees made three comebacks during the see-saw battle overcoming 5-1, 10-6, and 11-10 deficits. On his fifth hit, Damon tied the game in the eighth with a two run single but in the top half of the ninth, the most unlikely of scenarios saw David DeJesus take the first pitch of the inning deep to right off of Mariano Rivera giving the Royals an 11-10 lead. It was the first homerun Rivera had given up since August of last year. Fresh off the DL, Jorge Posada picked up Rivera and crushed a game-tying homerun to right field blowing Joakim Soria’s first save in 16 straight chances. And with two men aboard, Johnny Damon delivered the knockout on his SIXTH hit to bring the Bronx Bombers back to .500.

Mustache Power!

The Yankees were on their way to another disappointing loss with two outs in the ninth when Jason Giambi flexed his mustache at a pitch that would land in the upperdeck in right field. The memorable walk-off heroics of the Great Giambino drew flashbacks to his True Yankees moment when he hit a walk-off grand slam against the Minnesota Twins in the 14th inning of Giambi’s first year in pinstripes. Could this be the season-changing moment the Yankees were looking for to get going? We can only hope…

It’s Joba Time!

Joba Chamberlain made his much anticipated debut as a starter for the Yankees on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays and Roy Halladay. I guess he couldn’t draw a more formidable opponent, but with a strict pitch count, what could we really expect from this rookie phenom?

OPENING DAY!

After six long months of life without baseball, its finally time to rejoice in all the glory that is Opening Day. Far be it from the Land of the Rising Sun and the farce that was considered baseball’s official opening, today is the real deal, an opening on American soil that begins a historic farewell tour to the prestigious House that Ruth built.

The New York Yankees made the playoffs in style on Wednesday, hammering out 12 runs against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to clinch a postseason spot for the 13th consecutive season. After a roller coaster ride throughout the season, the Yankees have clinched by posting the best second half record in the Majors (48-22), clawing back from a 14 game deficit in the standings and surprising all the doubters who wrote them off midway through the season. With the win, Chien-Ming Wang posted his second consecutive 19 win season. As of now, the Yankees are slated to take the AL Wild Card, but with 4 games remaining on the season and 3 games back of the division leading Boston Red Sox, the Yankees are poised to take the Division titles for the 10th consecutive season. Let’s go Yankees!

The Gift

The rumors are spreading like wildfire and in its path stand the fantasies of every man in the form of a list of Hollywood’s hottest starlets. Sources have revealed that Jessica Alba has been filling a Valtrex prescription and the gift giver is none other than Derek Jeter. Whether Jeter has been delivering homeruns off the field with a tainted bat is purely speculation and even though the fantasies have been damaged beyond repair, New York’s playboy superstar has little to worry about with his image. Rumors are rumors that start in coffee shops and spread across the internet by overly dominant pink gossip websites. Let’s not lose sight of the fact that Derek Jeter has bedded a list of Hollywood’s finest, including: the Jessica’s (Alba and Biel), Scarlett Johannson, Vanessa Minnillo, Jordana Brewster, Gabrielle Union, Vida Guerra, Tyra Banks and of course Mariah Carey. One word, wow. But then again, a rumor is a rumor, and even though Derek Jeter may be every number 3 hitter’s dream to follow on the field, you can bet that off the field no man will be following him in their dreams anymore.

Clemens Takes Five for the Team

Roger Clemens has been suspended for five games after his retaliatory role in Toronto on Tuesday night. That’s right, FIVE GAMES…let the outrage begin. Are you kidding me Bob Watson? Is it me or has the Major League Baseball vice president of on-field operations elevated his power beyond totalitarian control. Since taking over as Der Fuhrer Selig’s right hand, Watson has handed out more suspensions than baseball has seen in the preceding twenty-five years. What was once settled by baseball’s unwritten rules has since turned into an abuse of umpire authority and an over-policing by the Commissioner’s office.

Alex Rodriguez hit 500…finally! Rodriguez added another chapter to his season long assault of the record books clubbing his 500th career homerun to become the youngest Major Leaguer to achieve the feat. Becoming the 22nd member to join the exclusive 500 homerun club at age 32 years and 8 days, A-Rod passed the previous record holder, Jimmie Foxx, by accomplishing the feat some 330 days earlier.

Bombs Away

The New York Yankees tied a franchise record on the eve of August 1 by slugging 8 homeruns in a 16-3 route of the Chicago White Sox. The fireworks may have been set for Alex Rodriguez’s chase of 500 career homeruns, but for as many balls that left the park Tuesday night, none of them carried the 500 insignia. Bobby Abreu led off the homerun assault clubbing a three run shot in the first inning. Hideki Matsui continued his tear through the month of July with his 12th and 13th homeruns of the month and 20th and 21st of the season. Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrera, Jorge Posada, Johnny Damon and Shelley Duncan followed with blasts of their own to tie the record set back on June 28, 1939 against the Philadelphia Athletics. Duncan continued his best impression of Shane Spencer circa 1998 with his 4th homerun in 21 career at-bats, drawing the crowd to demand yet another curtain call from the new fan favorite.

Something to Smile About

No, I’m not smiling because the Yankees put together consecutive wins for the first time since the middle of June, or the fact that Yankee bats erupted for 8 runs on 14 hits in Game 2 of their matchup with the Twins, or the fact that Chien-Ming Wang turned in a dominating four hit performance en route to the shutout, what I’m smiling about is Edwar Ramirez. Ramirez made his Major League debut in the ninth inning of an 8-0 shutout for the Yankees and in the spirit of Phil Rizzuto, Holy Cow he struck out the side! Wow, I haven’t seen a changeup that devastating in a while, and yes, with all our bullpen woes this season, Ramirez’s performance was definitely something to smile about.
